Obituary for Winfred Lyle Walker

Winfred Walker, 90, of Woolstock, died Monday, September 15, 2014 at his home. Visitation will be on Sunday, September 21, 2014 from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Trinity Lutheran Church Social Hall. Private family burial at Graceland Cemetery will be at a later date. Winfred Lyle Walker, son of Winfred A. and Nettie H. Frohling Walker, was born September 27, 1923 in Clarion, IA. He graduated from Blairsburg High School in 1941. Winfred married Orpha Hanson on October 1, 1944 in Clarion. This year was their 70th anniversary. Winfred and Orpha lived and farmed with his father until 1946, at which time they started farming for Charles Hoyt. In 1951 they moved to the Hoyt Farm about one mile north of Highview to raise row crops and dairy farm. Winfred and his brother, Alvin, sold their milk from the dairy herds to Carnation Dairy in Waterloo. In 1971 the couple moved to their home in Woolstock and continued to farm until his retirement in 1985. They spent winters in McAllen, TX from 1972-74 and then in Fort Myers, FL for 38 years. Winfred is survived by his wife, Orpha of Woolstock; son and daughter-in-law, Bob and Marilyn Walker of Webster City; daughters and sons-in-law, Winnetta Walker of Webster City, Jeannette and Doug Meyer of Webster City, Sheryll and Tim Cheers of Norwalk; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; sister, Alice Sanders Lucas of Urbandale; brother-in-law, Harlan and Karin Hanson of Webster City; and sister-in-law, Dorothy Olsen of California. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Alvin Walker; sister Lillian Braynard and granddaughter, Emily Walker. Winfred loved farming and the outdoors. He enjoyed watching and playing sports of all kinds, particularly tennis and basketball. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Trinity Lutheran Church or UnityPoint Hospice in memory of Winfred.
