David

I was only given 12 years to become aquainted with Dad after my marriage to Beth in 1999. I will say I've never met such a quiet and gentle man in my time on this Earth. He always took pride in his daughters and grandkids, and he was always a generous and sharing man whith his in-laws, me and Jim. I always found something interesting in his conversations with us, and being a military collector, I was ever interested to hear of his experiences during the war. While I must admit, Dad's service was not one of harrowing adventure or combat, for he served in the Carribean after enlisting in 1944, as he said "Everyone else was in the service, and I was about the only service aged man in the county left!" He had a deferment due to his occupation as a farmer. He liked to relate his most hazardous duty, when he had to strap on a pistol to take the mail in after paydays, so no one would be emboldended to try to steal the mail as fellow sailors mailed home either what was left (or what they had won) after gambling the night before. He said that he was the only one every one else entrusted with the money, because he was from Iowa, and had no wife or girlfrieng to mail the money to. I always said "He kept us safe from those invading Nazi subs." That always got a chuckle from him. The only regret I have is that his failing health prevented him from partaking in the Honor Flights. I know he would have immensly enjoyed that trip. At least he will be able to take the trip now in spirit, unencumbered by his failing body. Thanks for the time and memories Dad, I won't forget you!
