Obituary for Vera Ann Holkan

Vera Holkan, 97, of Story City, a longtime Webster City resident, died Sunday, September 28, 2014 at Bethany Manor in Story City. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Webster City, with Rev. Mark Eichler officiating. Burial will be in the Graceland Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Thursday. Vera Ann Deimel, daughter of August and Mary Consier Deimel, was born November 22, 1916 on a farm near Knierim, Iowa, the oldest of six brothers and five sisters. She attended a one room rural school in Greenfield Township. On April 10, 1939, she married Howard Melvin Holkan at Clarion. The couple resided in Webster City. She had been employed at Beam Industries for 21 years, retiring in 1988 and enjoyed being a homemaker. Mr. Holkan died March 15, 1980. For the last five years, Vera has resided at Windsor Manor. Mrs. Holkan is survived by daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Tom Pilcher of Ankeny; son, Jerold Holkan of Kellogg, Iowa; grandchildren, Susan and Landon Gemmel of Norwalk; Michael, Jeff and Chris Holkan; three step-granddaughters; three step-grandsons; ten great-grandchildren; 4 great-great-grandchildren; sister, Dolores Fitzgibbon of Webster City; Dale (Bess) Deimel of Manson; Gary Deimel of Lake City; Wilbur (Charlotte) Deimel of Bakersfield, CA; sister-in-law, Carrollyn Deimel of Texas; several nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, Vera was preceded in death by her parents; son-in-law, Richard (Dick) Eppard; daughter-in-law, Kathy Holkan; sisters, Doris Deimel at birth, Helen Deimel and Elsie Fairfax; brothers, Raymond, Edgar and Vernon Deimel; two sisters-in-law and a brother-in-law. Vera was the oldest living member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Doris/Eunice Circle, Retired Seniors (Bible Study), Assemble Newsletter, church quilting group, Ladies Aid, volunteer at the Braille Center, R.S.V.P volunteer and the Webster City Women's Club.
