Chuck Siegel

I give glory to G-d for the lives of Paul and Velma Mathis. They witnessed to my parents when I was about a year old in 1970, and I believe that it is because of this that our entire family has a relationship with G-d today. As the story goes, my young parents, Ron and Mary Jane Siegel, had recently been married and were living in an apartment in Bellevue, Nebraska in 1970. Both had been raised Catholic but neither particularly had much to do with G-d or church. Their second child, my younger brother Ronnie, had just died of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. They were both devastated. One day while my Dad was gone to work and my Mom was home alone with me, there was a knock at the door. My Mom answered and it was Paul Mathis. He had stopped by to introduce himself as the pastor of a new church, Bellevue Baptist Church, and to invite them to visit. My Mom told him that they believed in G-d, but neither had any interest in church because of their experiences in the Catholic Church while growing up. Paul said that he certainly understood that, but asked if perhaps they might have an interest in attending a bible study. He explained that they were starting a new bible study group and that the environment wouldn't be anything like church at all. My Mom was intrigued and she told my Dad about it when he got home. They both decided to give the bible study group a try, and the rest is history. They were soon church members, and I distinctly remember as a child seeing Pastor Mathis' fiery sermons in that pulpit that seemed 50 feet high. Blessed be the G-d of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, the G-d of Israel who created the entire universe and sent your servant Paul Mathis to knock on that humble door in Bellevue, Nebraska that day!
