Obituary for Luverne D. Elm

Luverne ( Bud ) Elm, 88, Webster City, died Monday, April 14, 2008 at the Hamilton Hospital. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Trinity Lutheran Church, with Rev. Dr. Mike Kroona officiating. Burial will be in the Washington Lutheran Cemetery, south of Duncombe. Visitation will be at the Foster Funeral and Cremation Center from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday and after 11:00 a.m. Thursday at the church. Luverne Dean Elm, son of Oscar and Mamie Severson Elm, was born May 9, 1919 on a farm south of Duncombe. He received his education at rural school Fremont # 6 (Mud Hollow). On November 26, 1939, he married Wilma Gayle Yeager at the Washington Lutheran Church at Duncombe. The couple farmed north of Webster City until 1975 then moved to an acreage south of Williams where they had a 7000 laying hen operation. He also farmed with his son, Lynn. In 1991, they moved to Webster City. This past year, he has resided at Southfield and Crestview Apartments and since November of 2007 at Crestview Senior Living. Luverne is survived by son and daughter-in-law, Lynn and Elaine Elm of Williams; daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Gerald Steuerwald of Duncombe; daughter-in-law, Ginny Elm of Minneapolis, MN; grandchildren, Dwight Elm, Andrea Stephenson, Kendra Hauch, Jeff Elm, Dawn Schwartz, Jason Steuerwald, Heather Larson, David Alexander and Steven Alexander; 16 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Mildred and Betty Elm, both of Webster City; several nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife, Gayle, he was preceded in death by his parents; son, Larry Elm in 2005; grandson, Kent Elm; great-grandson, Alex Steuerwald; brothers, John and Estel Elm. He was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church; a lifetime and active member of the Hamilton County Saddle Club. Luverne was a farmer all his life, helping Lynn in the Spring and Fall until this last year when age caught up with him. He loved his family and enjoyed watching his grandchildren and great-grandchildren with all of their activities. His biggest love after Gayle and his family was his horses. He had farmed with horses in his youth and rode into his 80's in horse shows, trail rides in Iowa and surrounding states. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends and his shy smile he had for everyone around him.
