Obituary for Lola Dunn

Lola Dunn, 101 years old, passed away Thursday, January 1, 2015, at Van Diest Medical Center. Lola was born September 22, 1913, near Hartwick, Iowa, fifth of seven children born to Daniel Webster Rowland and Myrtle Dixon Rowland. Following her father's death in 1922, the family moved to Cedar Falls where Lola attended the Lab School at Iowa State Teachers College, now known as UNI. In 1932 she married W. A. (Bill) Dunn, while both were college students there. Lola and Bill raised their family in the Sioux City area until 1947 when they moved to Webster City and went into the grocery business until their retirement in 1973. They enjoyed many winters with family and friends in Arizona. Through the years Lola was active in her church, Asbury United Methodist Church, and in the community. She served on numerous church committees and taught Sunday school for many years. She was a Girl Scout leader and particularly enjoyed her PEO Chapter JE of which she was a member for 61 years. She also enjoyed golf and friends at the Webster City Country Club; and, her several bridge foursomes. Most of all Lola was devoted to Bill, who predeceased her in 1994, and their children and grandchildren. In addition to her parents and siblings Lola was preceded in death by her daughter Sherry; son Verl; son-in-law Wayne Smid, and, grandsons Dirk Smid and Douglas McConnell. She is survived and will be lovingly remember by her daughters and sons-in-law Dixie and Merlyn McConnell, Walworth, WI; Billie Smid, Webster City, IA; Lynn and Steve Morris, Ankeny, IA; as well as her twelve surviving grandchildren, 37 great grandchildren; and a growing number of great-great grandchildren. A Service of Remembrance will be held on Saturday, May 23, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at Asbury United Methodist Church with Pastor Jeff Flagg officiating.
