Obituary for Herbert Hansen

Herbert Hansen, 80, of Marshalltown, died Sunday, January 31, 2010 at the Iowa Veterans Home at Marshalltown. Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Friday at the Foster Chapel. Burial will be in the Cass Township Cemetery, north of Webster City. Visitation will be 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 at the Foster Funeral and Cremation Center. Military rites will be conducted by American Legion Post # 633. Herbert Eugene Hansen, son of Holger and Florence Shafer Hansen, was born April 8, 1929 at Radcliffe. He attended rural schools and graduated from Radcliffe Public School. From 1951 to1953, he served with the U.S. Army at Camp Carson, Colorado Springs, Colorado. During the Korean War, he was drafted and served as a Fire Direction Leader in the U.S. Army. He started farming near Williams in 1946 and retired from farming in 1984. On May 4, 1957, he married Donna Mae Jaynes at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. From 1984 to 1994, he worked for the Iowa Department of Revenue as a mail clerk and tax specialist. The couple moved to Prairie City in 1984. He had resided at the Iowa Veterans Home since September of 2009. Herbert is survived by his wife, Donna; sons and daughters-in-law, Donald and Sherry Hansen of Prairie City; David and Annette Hansen of Norwalk; daughter and son-in-law, Debbie and Marty DeDecker of Altoona; 9 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters-in-law, Wilbur and Elaine Hansen of Ankeny; Kenny and Shirley Hansen of Turin; sisters and brothers-in-law, June and Bob Schweibert of Webster City; Ruth and Bob Cook of Iowa Falls; Clara and LaVerne Bell of Woolstock; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Kathy Hansen; son Dennis Hansen, siblings Carl and Cora Hansen, in infancy; and sister Margaret Bahrenfuss. Herbert was a member of the Williams United Methodist Church and the Praire City United Methodist Church; 20 year Leader of the Williams Booster 4-H Club; Township trustee; the Williams American Legion Post # 633, Hamilton County Extension Council, and past Vice President of the Iowa Hawkeye Horseshoe Pitchers Association.
