Larry Gauper

Dear Joan and family...Glenn broke me in on "the board" at KOVC. It was my first day in radio. Bob Ingstad, Sr., gave me an announcing job when I was 15 and a sophomore in high school. It was a Sunday morning when I reported for work and Glenn was my mentor. He showed me how to sign-on the station and, the next Sunday, when I was on my own, his mother called the station. I answered and she said, "You, Joan and the kids, come on out for dinner today." I said this isn't Glenn. She was extremely surprised and went to assert that she "just heard Glenn on the radio." I'm flattered to think Glenn and voices and radio styles so similar that his mother didn't immediately recognize the difference between us on the radio. When I worked for Glenn in Oakes, in 1961, my first summer after high school, a number of people thought I was Glenn on the radio. He was a consummate professional to "sound alike." Luck for me! That was a summer - and a boss - I will never forget and forever be grateful. "G.O." had a great voice and a friendly, sincere on-air style that easily attracted fans. I will always remember him and what he did for me in those early days and I was fortunate to have visited with him on the phone about a year ago. He sounded as interested and enthusiastic as he did back in 1958 when he showed me the ropes. May God bless his memory and be with his family during this time and in the future.
