Obituary for Gary West Hayes

Gary W. Hayes, 76, of Webster City, died Monday, February 27, 2012 at his home. A Celebration of Life will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Asbury United Methodist Church, with Rev. Linda Bibb officiating. Burial will be in the Graceland Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. until service time on Saturday. Gary West Hayes, son of Lester and Blanche Nelson Hayes, was born September 10, 1935 at Webster City. He received his education in the Webster City school system and graduated from Lincoln High in 1954. On November 4, 1956, he married Alice Rose Essig at the Little Brown Church at Nashua. The couple resided in Webster City. Gary worked at the Gambles Store, then for 30 years with the State of Iowa Liquor Commission until the state locations went private. He transferred to the Eldora Training School for Boys where he worked for ten years, retiring in 1998. Mr. Hayes is survived by his wife, Alice; son and daughter-in-law, Brad and Pam Hayes of Webster City; grandsons, Ben Hayes of Ames and Jake Hayes of Webster City; brothers and sisters-in-law, Clifford and Dorothy Hayes of Webster City; Leroy and Karen Hayes of Urbandale; Roger and Teresa Hayes of Webster City; Russell and Connie Hayes of Stewartville, MN; Gene and Jan Hayes of Fort Dodge; Steve and Beverly Hayes, and Ted and Jeri Hayes, all of Webster City; Marilyn Hayes of Garner; Glenda Hayes of Webster City; several nieces and nephews. Gary was preceded in death by his parents; son, Scott Hayes; daughters, Cheri Hayes and Shelly Hayes; brothers, Harlan and Bob Hayes. He was a member of the Asbury United Methodist Church; Izaack Walton Club, Hunter Safety Club, Hy-Vee Coffee Club, was a Cub Scouts leader and enjoyed working with the Pinewood Derby races; Diamond K (Kiwanis) member; former member of the Lions Club, former president of the Go-Cart Club; worked with the Easter Seals Society; member of the American Legion and was a member of the Iowa National Guard for several years. Worked at the Hamilton County Fairgrounds and race track for 30 years, active in community events, volunteered whenever needed and was chairman of promotion for the new high school athletic complex. He loved to play bingo with his friends. Most of all he enjoyed spending time with Ben and Jake attending their ballgames, concerts, remote control car races, go-karting and numerous school activities.
