Obituary for Esther Gripp

Esther G. Gripp, 90, of Lehigh, died May 30, 2017 at her home. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 17, 2017 at Calvary United Methodist Church in Stratford with Pastor Gina Spohnheimer, officiating. Burial will follow the services at Oakwood Cemetery in rural Stratford. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, June 16, 2017 at the church. Esther Genevieve Barr was born September 6, 1926 to Earl and Mabel (Woodard) Barr in Webster City. She was raised on the family farm near Homer. She attended Cutting Country School and then graduated from Stratford High School in 1944. Esther worked in Des Moines at the Iowa-Des Moines National Bank until her marriage to Lloyd Gripp on June 4, 1950 at the Homer United Methodist Church. They lived and worked in Des Moines, Fayette, Perry and then returned back to the family farm east of Lehigh in 1958, where they farmed in the Homer area until retirement. Esther and Lloyd enjoyed traveling for many years in their motorhome until Lloyd's death in 2004. Esther also loved her most precious Dalmatian companions over the years, most recent being Polo and Patch. Esther was a lifelong member of the Homer United Methodist Church and Homer UMW until its closing in 2008, when she became a member of the Calvary United Methodist Church in Stratford. She was also a member of the FW Sonksen American Legion Auxiliary in Stratford. She is survived by her son, Lee (Barbara) Gripp and granddaughter, Lena Gripp, all of Webster City. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Dorris Reed of Osceola, IA; three nieces and several cousins. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd in 2004.
