Obituary for Carl Rhoer

Carl Rhoer son of John and Martha Waggoner Rhoer was born on September 12, 1914 in Webster City. He received his education from the Webster City Community Schools. During W.W. II, he proudly served in the United States Navy Construction Battalion on the island of Tinian. From 1946 thru 1951 Carl was employed as a plumber for L.V. Mills Plumbing and Heating in Webster City. On multiple occasions, from 1951 thru 1956 he was a civilian contractor in the country of Greenland. On October 8, 1955 he married Margaret Ellen Davis McCoskey in Webster City. From 1960 until he retired in 1980 at the age of 66, Carl and Margaret owned and operated Iowa Brass and Specialty Company. Mrs. Rhoer died on December 29, 2003. Carl is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, Bryan and Bonnie McCoskey of Chanhassen, MN, Monte and Shawna McCoskey of Nashville, TN; grandson, Jeff and wife Sherrell McCoskey of Victoria, MN; granddaughter, Kristen and husband Peter Martin of Eden Prairie, MN; and great granddaughters, Kaitlin McCoskey, Callie McCoskey and Brynn Martin. In addition to his wife Margaret, he was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Charlie, Lawrence, Ralph and Paul Rhoer; and sisters, Laurie Abbott, Lucile Seamands, Flossie Kline and Isabelle Rhoer. Hockey played a significant role in Carl's life. He played in the Southern Minnesota and Iowa leagues from the 1940's into the early 1950's. During this time, his team won three titles in 1947, 1949 and 1950. He was presented the Friend of Education Award by the Webster City Education Association for his support of youth hockey. He continued to play hockey and skate competitively until he was 89 years old. At the age of 92, Carl was recognized by Iowa State University as an honorary Cyclone, for his support of hockey in Webster City, Ames and central Iowa. For many years, he and Margaret delivered Meals On Wheels in Webster City. He had also served on the Boone Valley Housing Board. He was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church and the American Legion Post #191 both of Webster City.
