Obituary for Bjorn Magnus Hjelmeland

Bjorn Hjelmeland, 74, of Webster City, died Tuesday, February 16, 2016 at Crestview Nursing and Rehabilitation. A Celebration of Life will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, February 19, 2016 at Foster Funeral and Cremation Center, with Reverend Steve Struecker officiating. Visitation will be held from 4:30 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. A memorial service and burial will be held in LuVerne in the spring. Bjorn Magnus Hjelmeland was born July 29, 1941 in Bergen, Norway, the son of Peder and Bjarnhild Sather Hjelmeland. In 1948 the family moved to Iowa. Bjorn graduated from LuVerne High School in 1959 and attended Hamilton Business College. He married Donna Wiese on September 13, 1969 at St. Cecelia Church in Algona. Bjorn farmed in Minnesota for several years before moving to Webster City in 1986. He raised hogs and drove semi for several companies including, Smithway, and Hawkeye Trucking. He also drove the Dart Bus in Fort Dodge. Bjorn is survived by his wife Donna of Webster City; children, Steve (Shanda) Hjelmeland of Webster City, Angela (Robbie) Bissen of Boone, Kayla Sorenson of Humboldt, Matthew Hjelmeland of Webster City, Alycia Hjelmeland of Cedar Rapids; 11 grandchildren; siblings, Asloug (Terry) Tobey of Las Vegas, NV, Anne Grete Heun of Colorado Springs, CO, Gerhard Hjelmeland of Humboldt, Mary Schumaker of Whittemore, Jeannie Collins of Waukee, Jack (Pattie) Hjelmeland of Harmony, MN, Craig (Bobby Jo) Hjelmeland of Algona, Ted (Sherri) Hjelmeland of Riceville; and many extended family. Bjorn was preceded in death by his parents and a brother in infancy, Finn Peder Hjelmeland. Bjorn was a past member of the Zion Lutheran Church in LuVerne.
