Obituary for Betty Sweet

Betty Sweet, 85, of Garrison, Minnesota, died August 22, 2008 at the Riverwood Health Care Center at Aitkin, MN. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, August 28 at the Foster Chapel, with Rev. Gerald Caquelin officiating. Burial will be in the Graceland Cemetery. Visitation will be at the Foster Funeral and Cremation Center from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Wednesday and prior to the service. Betty Jean Nelson, daughter of Charles and Marie Madsen Nelson, was born February 14, 1923 at Jewell. She received her education at Jewell. She married Earl Bernard Smart at Oakland, CA. The couple resided at Webster City. To this union a daughter, Patricia was born. Mr. Smart died July 3, 1973 from an accidental drowning at Lake Pepin, MN. On January 2, 1974, she married Kenneth Otho Sweet at New Orleans, LA. They made their home at Webster City. In 1977, they moved to Minnesota where they owned and operated the Borden Lake Resort at Garrison for 12 years, then retiring. Kenneth Sweet died January 12, 1989. She is survived by step-son, Kevin (Colleen) Sweet of Elk River, MN; step-daughters, Cindi Hoveland of Webster City; Lynette (Dennis) Holdgrafer of Williams; son-in-law, Walter Capps of Milaca, MN; sister, Luella Anderson of Story City; 2 grandchildren; 9 step-grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; 5 step-great-grandchildren. In addition to her husbands, she was preceded in death by a son, Kenneth Wayne Smart; daughter, Patricia Ann Capps; step-granddaughter, Lisa Holdgrafer; brothers, Chester, Karl, Sterling, Howard and Robert Nelson; sisters, Tena Johnson and May Ringstad. Betty was a member of the Light of the Cross Lutheran Church at Garrison and the V.F.W. Auxiliary.
