Jean Marie Scharfenkamp, daughter of William and Dorothy Scharfenkamp, was born on May 29, 1938 in Carroll, Iowa. As a young girl she attended Carroll Kemper Schools.
After her school years, she would meet the “love of her life,” Joseph Francis Berger. They were married for 56 years and had 3 wonderful children. Mark Joseph Berger (deceased), Keith William Berger of Des Moines and Kent Allen Berger of Appleton, WI. Jean worked as a custodian for the church, school and rectory for close to 30 years. She took great pride in being of assistance to all the teachers she worked with. She was dedicated to her job and was relied upon heavily.
Jean is survived by her two sons, Keith and Kent and his wife Janet; sister, Janet Davis; brother, Roy Scharfenkamp; and three cherished grandchildren, Kennedy, Carson, and Kylie.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Joe; son, Mark; twin brother, John and three siblings.
Jean’s various interests included her love of a wide range of music. She enjoyed traditional hymns of praise to golden oldies and was especially fond of Elvis songs. She could be known to, as she would say, “cut a rug” to her favorite catchy tunes. Singing in the church choir for 30 years was one of her greatest joys. Another huge passion was her love of young children, where she incorporated her own home babysitting business. She was very caring but also knew how to set firm limits, which the parents responded to with great praise for her skills.
She was someone who was compassionate and wore her heart on her sleeve. She would always bend over backwards for anyone in need. She had a listening ear for others who are struggling and acted as a cheerleader for anyone who needed their spirits lifted. She was very strong willed and was a three time cancer survivor.
Our hearts are in anguish over her passing since she will be deeply missed. Yet we also rejoice in her glorious reconnection with her husband and her son, as well as her extended departed family. Mom you will be remembered as the song says “You are My Sunshine.” Your radiant glow will continue to permeate through our sorrow. We know now, you are completely free from pain and dancing again in heaven. Thank you for being our loving Mom/Grandma and we know you are watching down on us from above, to guide us on our right path.
