Sheila was born June 22, 1950 in Laurens, Iowa, daughter of Mylo and Margaret Hyland. While growing up in Iowa, family moves included Dana, Fonda and finally Zearing. Sheila graduated from NESCO High School in 1968 and Iowa State University in 1972. She married Douglas Johnson in Zearing on June 9, 1973. After teaching elementary school for 5 years, she remained at home to raise her three children Erin, Devin and Michael in Randall Iowa. After living in the Kansas City area for several years, the family returned to Iowa and settled in Webster City in 1989. Sheila worked at First State Bank in Webster City for over 25 years in insurance, marketing and as the Prestige Club coordinator until retirement. She treasured the relationships she built at the bank and through Prestige Club.

Sheila’s greatest loves were her high school sweetheart, Doug, her children and her grandchildren. Sheila was a passionate reader who enjoyed traveling, quilting, scrapbooking, and crossword puzzles. During her life Sheila traveled throughout Iowa, the United States, and the world on trips with family and the Prestige Club. She created detailed scrapbooks of each of her trips filled with photos, maps, and stories.

She was an active member of the Webster City community and volunteered her time with multiple groups through St. Paul’s Lutheran Church (LWML, Christians in Action, Food Pantry, and others), the American Legion Auxiliary, the Hamilton County Hospital gift shop, and shared her love of books by reading to children at Webster City’s elementary schools.

Additionally, Sheila was heavily involved with the Family Readiness Group (FRG) in support of US Army Reservists for over 25 years. In recognition for her time and efforts supporting the FRG she received a number of recognitions including the Department of the Army’s Outstanding Civilian Service Medal from the US Army’s 75th Reserve Division for her leadership roles and work supporting the (FRG).
