Leslie Eggers

Leslie W. Eggers, 86, of Webster City, passed away Tuesday, January 29, 2008 at the Hamilton Hospital at Webster City. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, at Webster City, with Rev. Travis Schmidt officiating. Burial will be in the Graceland Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday at the Foster Funeral & Cremation Center and after 8:30 a.m. Saturday at the church. Leslie Warren Eggers, son of William C. and Lena Blue Eggers, was born on a farm east of Webster City on February 1, 1921. He was very happy and honored that he lived to see the farm where he grew up become a Century Farm during the summer of 2007. He attended Webster City Community Schools. On November 23, 1939, he married Ayleen Lyons at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church at Webster City. He and Ayleen lived and farmed north of Kamrar. They continued to live on the family farm until October of 2007, when they moved to 204 Bicentennial Court at Webster City. Les is survived by his wife of 68 years, Ayleen; daughters and sons-in-law, Gretchen and Henry Anderson of Webster City; Kathy and Chuck Murphy of Iowa City; sons and daughters-in-law, Bill and Marilyn Eggers and Delbert and Rita Eggers, all of Webster City; 9 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren. Les was preceded in death by his parents; granddaughter, Julie Marie Eggers and great-granddaughter, Kylie Marie Eggers. Les was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church where he was baptized and confirmed and a member of the Men’s Club. He and his family enjoyed riding horses and were members of the Hamilton County Saddle Club. He loved hunting deer and elk and went on hunting trips to Colorado and Wyoming. Les had a private pilot’s license and he and Ayleen spent a lot of time flying around the area here and often flew their plane to Minnesota to take the family fishing or visit relatives there. They were members of the Flying Farmers of America. For 26 years, Les and Ayleen wintered in Florida. For part of that time they lived on the Keys and fished in the area. Later they had a home at Englewood. Also while in Florida, they were members of the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary where they used their boat to go on some Coast Guard missions. During the last 12 years, Les and Ayleen had wintered at Mesa, AZ, where they enjoyed friends and many activities that were available there. While at Mesa, they attended the Greenfield Lutheran Church. For many years, their summers were spent at their place on Lake of the Woods on the Minnesota/Canadian border. It was here that they enjoyed fishing and the people with whom they have been friends throughout the years. Les was a life-long area farmer. This was an occupation that he loved and in which he took a great deal of pride. Most of all, Les loved his family and was very happy to spend time with all of them. Memorials may be left to the discretion of the family.
