Kathryn Jennie Koop, daughter of John A. and Avenelle K. (Stoll) Koop, was born February 25, 1947 in Webster City. She grew up on a farm near Kamrar, Iowa. She graduated from Northeast Hamilton High School in 1965. Following graduation, she attended the University of Iowa and later in life Iowa Central Community College for nursing. She worked many years at the Boondocks in Williams and was the manager of the 1st Class Tea Room in Webster City.
She is survived by her siblings, Mary Koop Clausen of Webster City, John (Jodi) Koop of Kamrar, Valerie Koop Achtemeier of Pasadena, CA; nieces and nephews, John (Carrie) Koop, T.J. (Britney) Clausen, Amanda (Travis) Luhman, Paul (Lendi) Clausen, Kelsey (Allan) Royster, Joey Koop, Lauren Achtemeier; 11 great nieces and nephews; and brother-in-law, Doug Achtemeier.
Kate was preceded in death by her parents, John and Avenelle Koop as well as sisters, Karen and Karleen Koop in infancy and her brother-in-law, Tom Clausen. She was a lifelong member of the First Presbyterian Church of Kamrar.
Kate was a loving and loyal daughter to her parents. She had a dedication to her immediate and extended family and was very proud of her German ancestry. As the eldest child of John and Avenelle, Kate stepped up as somewhat of a surrogate mother to her siblings – always looking after them, caring for them and giving them advice or firm directions. While Kate never had any of her own children, she was extremely close and motherly to her siblings, many nieces and nephews, cousins and grand nieces and nephews.
Most at home helping others, Kate loved to bake angel food cakes and other homemade treats for her family and friends. Of course, her sister Mary usually took most of the credit for the good deeds and considerate gestures – such as baking all of the angel food cakes. Known for her quick wit and sarcastic sense of humor, Kate was well read and never shied away from a debate or lacked a firm opinion. A typical “Koop“ trait. Her kindness extended to include her love for animals, particularly her faithful dog, Reba. She had a caring heart and truly wanted to support others – with a dose of unsolicited advice thrown in. She will be missed.
