Joseph Hartwig Sherman went to be with the Lord on June 11, 2025, at the age of 86, and was surrounded by his loving family. Visitation will be Monday, June 16, 2025 from 5-7 pm at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Webster City, Iowa. Funeral services will be Tuesday, June 17, 2025 at 10:30 am at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, officiated by Pastor Joe Pierson. Burial will be immediately following the service at Graceland Cemetery. Foster Funeral & Cremation Center is entrusted with the services.

Joe was given life by his creator on January 22, 1939, in Rockwell City, IA, the son of Joseph G. Sherman and Grace Hartwig Sherman. On February 12, 1939, he received the gift of Holy Baptism and became a child of God. On June 8, 1952, Joe publicly confessed his faith and was confirmed. He graduated from Fort Dodge High School in 1957, Mercedian School of Nursing in 1961 and later became a licensed Nursing Home Administrator. He was very active in the Iowa Nursing Home Association and held many offices. He served his country in the United States Army from 1961 to 1963 at Fort Carson, CO, with the Fifth Division.

On June 3, 1962, he married the love of his life, Charlotte Steckelberg. They were blessed with the gift of two daughters, Kathy and Ann. Joe was owner and administrator of Crestview Senior Living for 50 years and retired in 2012. God blessed him in his work and he felt every resident was special.

Joe loved flowers, trees, the sky, the clouds, and all of God’s creations, especially lakes and rivers. He loved Twin Lakes and enjoyed time there from the age of 10. He spent many years traveling and had visited all 50 states and many other countries. He loved boating on the Mississippi River and the years of fishing in Canada with his fishing buddies.

Joe was an active member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Fort Dodge and Webster City. He always loved the Lord.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters and brother-in-laws; Myetha and Vince Bobenhouse, Mavis Van Alstine, Darrell Gommels, Steve Mooney and Richard Steckelburg.

He will be greatly missed by his wife, Charlotte, his children; Kathy (George) Gourley and Ann (Paul) Root. His grandchildren Sawyer (Will) Higgins, Morgan (Dylan) Fielder, Gianna (fiance Caleb Bartling) Gourley, Joey (Lydia) Root, Jordan (Jordan) Japenga. He also loved his great-grandchildren; Brecken and Berit Higgins, Bodi and Beau Fielder, Reeve Root, Veda Japenga and baby boy Japenga coming the end of summer. Also Doris Gommels, Georigia Mooney, Jeanette (Ron) Utley, Louellen Steckelberg, and Gail Van Alstine.

Memorials may be left in Joe’s honor to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Webster City, IA.
