Joan was born on July 4, 1945 to Harold Washington Martin and Etta Belle (Desher) Martin and spent her childhood in Webster City. She graduated from Webster City High School in 1963 and was united in marriage to Larry L. Coleman on September 8, 1963, at Asbury Methodist Church in Webster City. Together, Joan and Larry shared 42 years of marriage, building a life filled with love, family, and many memorable adventures.

Joan and Larry welcomed their first son, Scott, on May 27, 1967 followed by Michael, born February 22, 1969; and Thomas, born December 4, 1971. In support of Larry’s career, Joan lived in several Midwestern communities including Clear Lake, Iowa; Marshalltown, Iowa; Wausau, Wisconsin; and Marshall, Minnesota, before returning to Webster City following Larry’s passing in 2006.

Joan’s life centered around her family, friends, and helping others. She took great pride in supporting her children’s activities, especially their sports, and enjoyed camping, snowmobiling, and motorcycle travel with Larry. Later in life, she found fulfillment volunteering at Crestview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Webster City. Above all else, Joan treasured her role as a grandmother to seven grandchildren and was delighted to become a great-grandmother to Rhys in 2024.
