Ellis " Doc " Swon, 88, of Webster City, died Wednesday, May 5, 2010 at the Hamilton Hospital. A Celebration of Life will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Asbury United Methodist Church, with Rev. Pete Peterson officiating. Burial will be in the Graceland Cemetery. Visitation will be at the Foster Funeral and Cremation Center from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Friday and at Asbury after 11:00 a.m. Saturday. Graveside military rites will be conducted by American Legion Post #191. Ellis S. Swon, son of John and Inez Toler Swon, was born June 24, 1921 at Auxvasse, MO. He graduated from Lincoln High School, Webster City, in 1939. He also attended the University of Delaware and Iowa State University. During W. W. II, he served with the U.S. Army 171st Engineers in the European, African and Middle Eastern Theatres of Action. In 1950, he graduated from Drake University. On June 24, 1951, he married Kathleen A. Lessels at Asbury United Methodist Church. The couple resided in Webster City, where he retired in 2001 from a 51 year career with Webster City Federal Savings Bank which included serving as its President and Chairman of the Board. Doc was also Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Iowa Savings and Loan League from 1978-79. Doc is survived by his wife, Kathy; sons and daughters-in-law, Gary and Linda Swon of Irvine, CA and their children, Erin, Emily and Luba; Kyle and Darcy Swon of Webster City, and their children Bryan, Shannon and Lauren Swon. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, John H. Swon II. He was a longtime member of Asbury United Methodist Church, Webster City Rotary, American Legion Post # 191, Acacia Lodge # 176 - A.F. and A.M. of Webster City. He also served 6 years on the Webster City School Board. In 1990 he was recognized for outstanding service as a Director of the Webster City Development Corp. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be sent to Webster City High School c/o Ellis Swon Memorial Fund.
