Vernice Hemmen, 104, of Webster City died, Monday, October 6, 2014 at the Southfield Wellness Community. Funeral services will be held Saturday, October 11, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at the Foster Funeral and Cremation Center, with Rev. John Wilson officiating. Burial will be in Presbyterian Cemetery in Kamrar. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service on Saturday. Vernice Mae Hemmen, the daughter of Kaos and Engelina Van Langen Hemmen was born September 9, 1910 on the farm in Blairsburg. She graduated from Kamrar High School. As a young women Vernice spent her life on the farm near Blairsburg with her sisters and parents. They raised chickens, milked cows, raised calves, mowed the yard with a push mower, fed the cats and kept the milk house in pristine cleanliness. They had a huge vegetable and flower garden. All the relatives fondly remembered the Sunday dinners at the farm house. They never knew how many cousins, aunts, uncles, babies and friends would come but the food never ended. As the primary driver she took the family to Webster City every Wednesday and Saturday to sell their eggs and cream. On these days, she would sign up for prizes through local businesses and often won. Vernice was creative and won many ribbons at the Hamilton County Fair for clothes she made on her treadle sewing machine. Her hobbies were embroidery, tatting and crocheting. She made several of the grandchildren doll quilts, which they loved. In 1994 Vernice purchased a house in Webster City where she resided until May 2014 when she entered the Southfield Care Center. Survivors include nieces, Sandy (Doug) Rasmussen of Johnston, Rae Jean Risetter of Radciffe, Sharon Schumacher of Bozeman, MT, Mary Klaver of Webster City, Ardis Hunt of Red Oak, Shirley Eckstine of Webster City; nephews, Kendall (Kay) Klaver of Webster City, Ron (Leila) Hemmen of Webster City. Vernice was preceded in death by her parents, brothers, Harold and Ray Hemmen, sisters, Viola Hemmen, Leona Hemmen, Freda Klaver, Pearl Klaver; nephews, Wayne and Larry Hemmen; niece, Wanda (Hemmen) Meier.
