Obituary – Patricia Ann (Scoles) Downard
Patricia Ann (Scoles) Downard, 98, of Webster City, Iowa, died of natural causes on July 18, 2021, at Village Green Alzheimer’s Care in Cypress, Texas. She was born in Des Moines, Iowa on October 23, 1922, and graduated from Rockwell City (Iowa) High School in 1940. She attended Drake University for one year and later worked at the University of Chicago in Chicago, Ill. She returned to Webster City to assist her parents (Lydia and Neil Scoles) when her mother’s health failed. In 1947, she married Arthur L. Downard in Fort Dodge, Iowa. They were married for 70 years and spent most of those years in Webster City.
Pat was an active participant in her husband’s business running the Webster and Corral Theatres. She was an avid golfer who competed at a very high level and was active in the Asbury United Methodist Church as well as the Kendall Young Library. The League of Women Voters, PEO, PTA, book club, and bridge club rounded out other activities Pat loved.
She was preceded in death by her husband Arthur, in 2017; brother Neil Scoles, in 2014; sister Helen Johnson, in 2014; and son-in-law Ted Kesler, in 2020. Pat is survived by her three children: Josie Kesler of Houston, TX; Arthur L. Downard, Jr. (Larry Cusack) of Portland, OR; Thomas Downard (Kim Taylor Knight) of Boston, MA; sister Beth Scoles, of Des Moines and brother Dan Scoles, (Sue) of Ames along with three grandchildren (Chris, Carrie, and Lydia) and three great-grandchildren (Abby, Colin, and Alex).
