Obituary for John Malmberg

John Malmberg, 73, of Webster City died Saturday, June 19, 2021 at Crestview Nursing and Rehabilitation. Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, June 22, 2021 at Foster Funeral and Cremation Center, with visitation one hour prior to the funeral. Burial will follow the service at Graceland Cemetery.
John Phillp Malmberg, son of Phillip and Mildred (Gustafson) Malmberg, was born October 20, 1947 in St. Paul, MN. He was raised in the Lutheran church and was confirmed in 1963. After graduating from Harding High School in St. Paul he pursued and received a Bachelor of Science degree from Wisconsin State University – River Falls on November 16, 1969. He served in the United States Army. He had a lifelong career as an accountant for the State of Minnesota in the Agriculture department. He enjoyed being an active member of Toastmasters.
John married Sue White and the couple were foster parents to many special needs children in Ramsey County. John and Sue adopted one son, Brent Malmberg. The couple later divorced, and John continued to foster.
John and Karen Kruger Ely were united in marriage on July 1, 1997 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. The couple made their home in St. Paul and after retiring bought a home in Iowa. John took on a caring roll as Karen’s health declined until her passing in 2016. In October 2017 John moved to the memory care unit at Crestview Nursing & Rehabilitation center in Webster City, Iowa.
He is survived by his granddaughter Ashley; his in-laws, Kenny (Mary) Kruger, Kathy (Bill) Willis, and their families as well as many foster children who called him dad.
John was preceded in death by his parents; son, Brent; wife, Karen; brother-in-law, Kevin Kruger and father-in-law and mother-in-law, Verle and Evelyn Kruger.
The family would like to thank his care givers at Crestview as well as his care team from Kindred Hospice.
