Obituary for Donald Dean Johnson

Donald D. Johnson, 97, of Webster City died Friday, October 29, 2021 at Windsor Manor. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, November 3, 2021 at Asbury United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at Graceland Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Foster Funeral and Cremation Center is entrusted with the services.
Donald Dean Johnson was born on the family farm in Kirkman, Iowa on October 26, 1924 to Carl F. and Ella Thompson Johnson. He was the fifth child in the family with siblings - Gaillard, Agnita, Richard, Frances and Edna. Don’s father died when Don was 14, and his mother when he was 19.
His school days were spent in the Kirkman and Irwin schools. He graduated from Irwin High School in 1942. In high school he participated in baseball and basketball, lettering in his freshman year. Don farmed two years with brother, Richard, and his mother. In 1944, he enlisted in the United States Navy where he served until 1946. Most of the time Don was on a hospital ship, the USS Solace, which transported wounded military from the Pacific to San Francisco.
He worked for Iowa State Extension service for 6 years in Shelby, Dallas, and Hamilton Counties. In 1954, Don began working for American Cyanamid in field research on antibiotics where he worked for 35 years. In 1990, he was awarded with the title of Fellow honor by American Society of Animal Science.
Retirement years were spent in Webster City participating in golf and family activities. Don was a strong community member, serving on the Hamilton County Conservation Committee for 10 years and two terms on the CC Board. He was a member of Asbury Methodist Church, serving as an usher for over 50 years. Don also belonged to the American Legion Post #191 for over 60 years.
On December 18, 1949, Don married Yvonne Christiansen at the Bethel Baptist Church in Harlan, Iowa. The couple have three sons, Roger (Tina) of Loveland, CO, Curtis (Theresa) of Springfield, Mo, Scott (Gina) of Tulsa, OK; six grandchildren, Jill, Tyler, Evan, Jordan, Rebecca, Stephen; six great-grandchildren, Nolan, Evelyn, Kal, Alex, Cody, and Eliza. He was very interested in his 15 nieces and nephews on the Johnson side and the four on Yvonne’s side of the family.
He will be missed so much by so many. Don was a good man, husband, father, and friend to many. Don was a big fan for the Cardinals, Iowa State and the Lynx.
Memorial contributions may be given to Asbury United Methodist Church or the Enhanced Hamilton County Foundation for a general scholarship fund at Webster City High School in Don’s memory.
