Dean Weldon Flaws Sr. was born on February 18, 1934, to parents Alden “Buster” and Leona (Ratcliff) Flaws in Webster City. He grew up and attended school in Webster City. Dean graduated from Lincoln High School with the Class of 1952 with a thirteen-year perfect attendance record. He served in the United States National Guard for two years following high school.
On May 24, 1953, Dean married Virginia Phillips in Fort Dodge, IA. This union was blessed with five children: Dean Jr., Joni, Jay, Jim, and Larry. Together they raised their family in Webster City. Sadly, Virginia passed away on August 20, 1985.
Dean found love and companionship again. He married Sharon Hanus on March 8, 1990, in Las Vegas, NV. They too made their home in Webster City as Dean continued to drive truck for Winnebago. He drove for them for thirty-five years, retiring in 2004.
Dean loved cars, especially fast ones! He was a stock car enthusiast and raced his own #3 for many years. Being inducted into the Hamilton County Racing Hall of Fame was something he was proud of. When Dean stopped driving #3, he was able to continue with life on the track by helping his son, Dean Jr., driver of #3JR, in the pits. A loud revved up engine always brought a smile to his face.
While racing and being at the track was at the top of Dean’s list of favorite things to do, spending time with his family ranked #1. He was so proud of all his kids and grandkids. He could be found attending events all over watching them participate in different sports, especially here in Webster City and down in Carlisle. Dean was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan. He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Sharon Flaws of Webster City; children: Dean Jr. (Jean) Flaws of Carlisle, Joni (Chris) Hilpipre of Carlisle, Jay Flaws (Deb Smith) of Carlisle, Jim (Lori) Flaws of Carlisle, and Larry (Leslie) Flaws of Webster City; seventeen grandchildren; eighteen great-grandchildren; sister Janet Gibeault of Phelan, CA; brother Steve (Vicky) Flaws of Urbandale, IA; many other extended family members and friends.
Dean was preceded in death by his first wife, Virginia Flaws; parents, Buster Flaws and Leona Bruno; and siblings: Robert C. Flaws, Arliss Korioth, Alan McIntyre, and Jan Beem.
