Obituary for Darla M Wilcox
Darla Wilcox, age 85 of Stratford, IA, passed away on Thursday, January 13, 2022, at Southfield Wellness Community in Webster City, IA. A Memorial Service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, January 19, 2022, at Stanhope Parish in Stanhope, IA. Visitation will be held prior to the service at the church on Wednesday from 9:00-10:30 a.m. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Jewell, IA, at a later date. Foster Funeral and Cremation Center of Webster City is entrusted with services.
Darla Maxine Cottington was born on September 25, 1936, to parents Beryl and Arlene (Carlson) Cottington in Huron, SD. They moved to Des Moines, IA, and in 1948, they moved to Stanhope where Darla attended school and graduated from Stanhope High School with the class of 1954. Darla then attended the Iowa State Teacher’s College in Cedar Falls, IA, where she obtained her teaching certificate. She taught for a short time in Sac City, IA, and Alden, IA. Darla continued teaching as a substitute teacher in area elementary schools for many years.
On December 29, 1957, Darla married Charles Wesley Wilcox at the Stanhope Christian Church. This union was blessed with four children: Brian, Brenda, Benny, and Bruce. Together they raised their family on a farm just outside of Stratford.
Darla was a lifelong member of Stanhope Parish where she played the organ for well over sixty years. She also served as the choir director and took part in the bell choir. She loved music and loved teaching others giving piano lessons to over one hundred students in her lifetime.
Darla was a very crafty and creative person who always had projects she was working on. She enjoyed sewing/quilting and made many beautiful quilts over the years, including special ones for each of her grandchildren. Over the years she also enjoyed gardening, taking care of flowers, crossword puzzles and playing the piano at local care centers.
She will be missed dearly by all who knew and loved her. Survivors include her husband, Charles Wilcox of Stratford; children: Brian Wilcox of Stratford, Brenda (Tom) Formanek of Britt, Benny (Rosie) Wilcox of Florence, KY, and Bruce (Kelly) Wilcox of Stratford; grandchildren: Lance Steward, Sara, Laura, and Brett Formanek; brothers Gary Cottington of Pella and Nyle (Jan) Cottington of Jewell; sisters-in-law Carolyn Cottington of Boone and Betty Yochum of Delafield, WI; many other extended family members and friends.
Darla was preceded in death by her parents, Beryl and Arlene Cottington; brother Merril Cottington; and sister-in-law Phyllis Cottington.
