Obituary for Alice Spitler (Nemechek)

Alice Thompson Spitler, age 94, of Stratford passed away on April 13, 2019, at Hearth Stone Memory Care Unit in Boone, Iowa.
Alice was born in Fort Dodge, Iowa on July 9, 1924, the daughter of Edward and Wanda Faye (Franklin) Nemechek. She graduated from Stratford High School.
On February 9, 1943, she married Berwin Thompson in Bethany, Missouri. While raising six children, she worked outside the home as a grocery clerk, restaurant owner, study hall monitor and bank teller. She found the time to create beautiful dresses for her daughters for many special occasions.
After Berwin passed away in 1987, Alice focused on making quilts and crocheting countless items for the church bazaar and as gifts for family members. She enjoyed sharing her faith through her intricate handiwork. Her crocheted picture of the Good Shepherd won Best of Show at the Hamilton County Fair.
Alice met and married Howard Culver in 1992. The couple enjoyed fishing trips to Minnesota and watching Iowa Hawkeye sports. Their happy years together were cut short when Howard passed away in 1998.
In 2001, Alice’s granddaughter introduced her to Jim Spitler and the couple married later that year. Alice and Jim enjoyed shopping, going to the rodeo and attending family activities together. Jim passed away in 2004.
Alice loved spending time with her family including many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. She played chicken-foot dominos once a week with a lively group of friends.
Alice’s family would like to thank the staff of Eastern Star Masonic Home and Hearth Stone Memory Care Unit for their loving care of Alice the last five years of her life.
A lifelong Christian and long-time member of McGuire Bend Church in rural Dayton, Alice shared her faith with her family and others. Alice left a message to be shared with everyone: “I pray that you will all put the Lord in your heart and love one another. See you someday on the other side.”
Alice is survived by her daughters Bonnie (David) DeCoursey, Cheryl (Walter) Mills, Linda (Alan) Carlson, and Lora (Steven) Phillips; daughter-in-law Barb Thompson; brother Richard Nemechek; sister Arlene Culberson; many nieces, nephews and grandchildren.
Alice was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, son Larry Thompson, daughter Barbara (Loren) Scott, brothers Lyle Nemechek and Dale Nemechek, sister Becky Ferguson, great-great-grandsons Gabriel and Caleb Ehler.
A service to celebrate Alice’s life will be held at 10:30am on Wednesday, April 17, 2019, at the McGuire Bend Church near Dayton. Interment will be at the Oakwood Cemetery near Stratford. Visitation will be held Tuesday, April 16 from 5-7pm at the Calvary United Methodist Church in Stratford. Memorials may be directed to McGuire Bend Church in memory of Alice.
